How to Show Your Support for Veterans This Memorial Day

Anyone who knows a veteran knows how important and difficult a holiday like Memorial Day can be. Carefully planned parades and patriotic t-shirts are the norm, but they're not the only way to celebrate and honor the sacrifices made by those in the armed forces. Adding a few more impactful traditions to your holiday routine could help make a huge difference for the veterans in your community. Below are just a few ways to put your patriotism on display in support of veterans this Memorial Day.

3 Patriotic Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day

1. Support Living Veterans

Every year in the United States, nearly 6,000 veterans die by suicide, and up to 40,000 are unhoused. After leaving the armed forces, many vets lack access to mental healthcare to help them deal with the traumas of the job. Others may leave service with little to no applicable experience in the workforce and receive no institutional support in their search for a career. That these veterans receive so little support after leaving is a tragedy, and the most patriotic thing a civilian can do is offer support to living veterans to help them get back on their feet. This Memorial Day, consider donating to a cause for veterans.

2. Wear Red, White, and Blue

Many people don't know that, while wearing the nation's colors is appropriate for the holiday, wearing representations of the flag is not condoned under U.S. Flag Code. So, you can show your pride for your country by wearing the right colors on Memorial day, but avoid wearing any flags, which is a violation of the etiquette suggested by Flag Code and may be harmful or disrespectful to veterans. Since it'll be hot during Memorial Day celebrations, look for a breathable t-shirt and shorts to help keep you cool.

3. Volunteer With a Veteran's Organization

If your area has a local veteran's home or other veteran support organization, consider volunteering your time and resources to help out. And if there isn't a group doing this work close to you, you can start your own. These organizations range in function from supporting families who lost a loved one during active duty to housing homeless veterans and aiding in medical care for injured vets. Their efforts make a tangible difference in the lives of veterans every day, and your time can help aid their mission.
