Wearing a baseball cap for any event or occasion is a popular American trend. Baseball caps came into being around the middle of the 18th century and became popular at the beginning of the 19th century. A classic baseball cap was made of cotton fabric with a bill large enough to shield the wearer's eyes from the sun or rain. Traditionally, a cloth-covered button was sewn on top of a baseball cap, and grommets or eyelets were placed around the cap for ventilation.
Today, baseball caps are more popular than ever for both men and women. They are available as fitted caps in traditional hat sizes and as adjustable caps with a snapback or a slide closure. Here are some things that you can do to a fitted cotton cap and an adjustable cotton cap to fit them, shape them, and wear them.
Fitting a Baseball Cap
A well-fitting baseball cap should sit comfortably above your ears with the bill resting in the middle of your forehead. The crown of the baseball cap should top your head, leaving a little space between your head and the cap. A baseball cap should fit on your head so that it will not come off with a wind gust yet won't leave a mark on your forehead. You should be able to easily spin the cap around your head to wear it facing forward or backward.
If your fitted baseball cap is a little tight, you can dampen the crown of the cap with hot water and place it on the outside of a bowl or pot. As the cap dries, the band of the cap will stretch and get bigger.
If your fitted baseball cap is a little loose, you can spray water on the inside and outside of the band without spraying the section near the brim. Place the cap on a flat surface like a kitchen counter and use a hairdryer to begin to dry the outside of the band. Flip the cap onto the crown and use the hairdryer to begin to dry the inside of the band. While the band is still slightly damp, place the cap on your head and allow it to air dry as you wear it.
Breaking In a Baseball Cap
To initially break in a new baseball cap, dampen it with hot water and wear it. While you wear it, curve or flatten the bill with your hands to shape it the way you like it. Wear the baseball cap as it air dries so that it conforms to the shape of your head.
Shaping the Bill of a Baseball Cap
It is currently fashionable to wear a baseball cap with a flat bill that just slightly curves around your face. When you buy a new baseball cap and want to flatten the bill a little, you can dampen the bill with hot water, place it on a flat surface, and weigh it down with a flat-bottomed cooking pot filled with water.
If you want to curve the bill on a new baseball cap, you can lightly spray it with hot water and gently roll it until it fits inside a large coffee mug. Allow the baseball cap to remain in the mug until it dries and takes the shape you want.
Wearing a New Baseball Cap
When you first wear a baseball cap, frequently flatten or curve the bill with your hands to shape and customize the shape of the bill. Eventually, your new cap will respond to your manipulations and take the shape you want.
